All about Surrey Uni

The University of Surrey calls itself a global university with a world-class research profile and an enterprising spirit. There are over 50 subjects at undergraduate level, plus over 130 taught postgraduate courses as well as research programmes on offer – split across five faculties: Arts and Human Sciences, Engineering and Physical Sciences, Health and Medical Sciences, Law and Management.

The main campus is Stag Hill in Guildford; its other sites include The Surrey Research Park, the Surrey Clinical Research Centre, the Postgraduate Medical School, the Varsity Centre.


Campuses

The Stag Hill campus in Guildford, in the South East of England, is set in a green landscape comprising of designed gardens, playing fields and a lake - a short walk from the town centre and Guildford Cathedral. There are almost 15,000 students at the university, over 10,500 are undergraduates and almost 4,500 are postgraduates. The female to male split is 54 / 46.

Other specialist sites include The Surrey Research Park, the Surrey Clinical Research Centre, the Postgraduate Medical School and the Varsity Centre – all located close to the Royal Surrey County Hospital. There are regular bus services from the main campus.

A second campus, at Manor Park, is a short distance away and has additional accommodation, academic buildings and sporting facilities (the new £35 million Surrey Sports Park.) The Manor Park campus is a car-free village.

In 2007, the University of Surrey built the Surrey Multifaith Centre on campus. It was the first building in Britain to have a Synagogue, Muslim Prayer Hall, Gurdwara and Chapel built separately under one roof.

A very high percentage of the University of Surrey student population complete courses that include a work-based professional training year. The university is famous for its consistently outstanding employment record, and its focus on employability for students whilst undertaking a higher education course.

Guildford lies conveniently between the two major UK airports,Heathrow and Gatwick, and is only 35 minutes by train from London. Guildford is also on the main train lines between London Waterloo and Portsmouth.


Teaching

The University of Surrey offers around 50 undergraduate degree and diploma courses, plus over 130 postgraduate taught courses as well as research programmes. It has around 2300 members of staff.

The University of Surrey specialises in The Arts, Engineering, Health, Human Sciences, Law, Management, Medical Sciences and Physical Sciences. Its wide range of postgraduate research opportunities span diverse areas that range from dance to clinical practice. Programmes of study can lead to qualifications such as Doctor of Engineering (EngD), Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) as well as the traditional PhD and MPhil.


Fees

Undergraduate students (UK and EU) looking to study at the University of Surrey in September 2011 will pay £3375 a year in tuition fees (except for students on NHS-funded programmes.) From September 2012, undergraduates will pay £9000 a year in tuition fees.

Full-time tuition fees for overseas students in 2011 range from £11,000 to £13,750, although fees for certain programmes may be higher.

UK and EU students enrolled in Nursing, Midwifery, Operating Department Practice, Paramedic Practice and Nutrition/Dietetics programmes have separate funding arrangements, including liability for tuition fees, administered through the Department of Health.

Postgraduate students will typically pay £3,440 for full-time study, and £1,720 for part-time study – although it does depend on the subject area. Overseas postgraduate students will typically pay £12,500 for full-time study and £6,250 for part-time study.

Part-time certificate, diploma, degree and postgraduate course fees vary according to subject or specialism.


Funding

Bursaries for 2011 are provided to all students eligible for maintenance support, or a Special Support Grant, and/or whose residual household income has been assessed at a level up to £30,000. You will receive from £660 to £1,520 in financial support, depending on your circumstances (higher than the mandatory £338 per year in non-repayable financial support to students who receive the full maintenance grant of £2906.)

Extended programme bursaries are worth £1687.50 in 2011 (50% of the relevant full-time fee) for home/EU students doing extended degrees – e.g. 5 year MEng programmes.

University of Surrey Entry Scholarships are worth £2,000 and are awarded to all home/EU students studying Physics, Chemistry and Languages in 2011 who achieve an excellent academic standard. Any student not awarded an Entry Scholarship is eligible for a Performance Scholarship of £1,000 if they achieve first class results (70 per cent or more) at the end of their first or second year (Level 1 and Level 2).


Facilities

The Stag Hill campus has 3 coffee bars including Starbucks, and 3 restaurants – plus an on site pizza house that delivers to student bedrooms. The library offers wi-fi access, computers and other audio-visual equipment, print and copy facilities, bookable private study space, whiteboard and interactive systems as well as a training room housing workshops.

The brand new Surrey Sports Park at the Manor Park site is a premiere venue for elite sport, physical activity, well-being and leisure. Its state-of-the-art facilities include a 50m, 8-lane swimming pool, a 120 station health and fitness centre, an indoor climbing centre, 3 multi-purpose sports halls, squash courts, tennis courts and a range of outdoor sports pitches.

The campus also has modern lecture theatres, teaching rooms, computer and science labs, a library, bookshop, post office, convenience store, bank and launderette.


Ranking

The University of Surrey is ranked 19th in the Guardian 2012 Guide; 28th in The Complete University Guide and 33rd in the Sunday Times.

The Unistats website says 82% of final year undergraduate students at Surrey were satisfied with the quality of their course (National Student Survey.) It also reports that 92% of students have a job after graduating or continue with further study, and 80% are employed with a graduate job.


Term dates

University of Surrey students break up for the summer on 17 June 2011. The 2011-2012 academic year begins with the Autumn term, from 26 September 2011 to 16 December 2011. Spring term starts on 16 January 2012 to 6 April 2012, and the final Summer term from 7 May 2012 to 15 June 2012.
