20 year old student becomes Epsom’s youngest Labour Counsellor

A first year politics student at the University of Surrey has become the youngest ever counsellor for Epsom and Ewell council. The first year politics student will begin his duties this month as one of the thirty seven returning and newly elected counselors.

A change in the law in 2006 lowered the required age limit for running for council from 21 to 18, encouraging more young people to get involved in their local areas. The student has said “It’s obviously a massive honour to be the youngest counsellor,” but admits he hopes people will not judge him because of his youth.

Being a counsellor brings with it a lot of responsibilities, but it will also be an excellent addition to this politics student’s studies: “I’m looking forward to learning more about the council, its processes and going forward working with other members and officers to get things done.”
